Andy Bell Interviews
Promotion has started for the 'Non-Stop' release and there's two new interviews with Andy online for you this week; he was interviewed by the Yorkshire Evening Post for a feature that ran in the paper last weekend and which is now available online, and a second interview went online at Bent.com yesterday. Both interviews are well worth a read, for more about the 'Non-Stop' project of course, but also for Andy's thoughts on the 'Call On Me' video, the new Erasure album, his DJ appearances, reality TV and how good a cook Vince Clarke is…
Andy Bell Goes Back To The 80s...
Digital and online radio station Absolute 80s' 'Happy Hour' show is hosted by Andy Bell this week and will be repeated every day at midday until tomorrow (Friday). You can listen via DAB or online.

Inspired by the Andy Bell interview in the Yorkshire Evening Post this week, I have used Yorkshire dialect for the greeting and farewell in this newsletter, as suggested by Mark!

Special Competition - Interview Andy Bell In London
As you know, on May 14th Andy will be headlining Mencap's 'Our Friends Acoustic' evening at London's IndigO2, topping a bill that also includes performances from Jimmy Somerville, Nik Kershaw and Howard Jones. I have two tickets to the show to give away (one winner plus a friend) but that's not all… before the show the winner and their friend will also get an exclusive preview of the entire 'Non-Stop' album (almost four weeks before release!) and will then sit down with Andy to do an exclusive interview about the album for Andy's website (don't worry if you've never done anything like that before as I'll be there to help you if you need it). Fancy that? See the news section on Andy's website for all the details!
Yazoo's 'Only You' Charity Cover
Yazoo's classic 'Only You' has been covered by Dakota Blonde on 'In my Room', a new US charity album that has been released to benefit the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. See the Yazoo website for more details and how to listen to an extract of the cover online.
Andy Bell New Release Dates
If you were paying attention to the news about the 'Non-Stop' presale above you will have spotted that Andy's album has a new release date of June 7th. The forthcoming single, 'Call On Me', has also moved slightly and will now be released on May 31st.
'Sometimes - A Life Of Love, Loss & Erasure'
I'm sure that many of you know that Paul Hickey, Andy Bell's manager and former partner, has for the last few years been working on a book about his life. I'm very pleased to say that the book - entitled 'Sometimes - A Life of Love, Loss & Erasure' - is almost finished and will be published later this year. Paul is in the process of setting up a website for the book and you can already go there to sign-up for more information as it becomes available.
Lexer Music Spring Sale
Lexer Music, who run the Official Erasure Shop, are having a Spring sale which means that there are all sorts of Erasure, Andy Bell and Yazoo bits and pieces available at special low prices, as well as items from other artists including Goldfrapp, OMD and Pet Shop Boys. Happy Birthday Andy Bell!
Sherry, who runs one of the unofficial Erasure forums, has set up her usual guestbook to mark Andy Bell's birthday which is this coming Sunday. If you would like to leave a message for Andy then you can do so by following the link…
Erasure On BBC Radio Four!
Rob emailed me last week to say that Erasure's version of 'Lay All Your Love On Me' is currently being used on BBC Radio 4's 'Book At Bedtime' as the opening and closing music for their current book - Naomi Alderman's 'The Lessons' - which is currently at episode eight in a ten-part adaptation. The last few episodes are still available to listen to on the BBC iPlayer if you're in the UK, but it sounds like a pretty good book to me and it's nice to hear Erasure on Radio 4! Thanks Rob!
Phew, that was a long one! The greetings and farewell in this week's newsletter are in Finnish, thanks to Mikael!
Näkemiin!

Vince Clarke Mini-Documentary
I've talked before about how Motherboard TV's excellent mini-documentary about Vince and his studio in Maine, 'The Cabin', has been appearing all over the internet, well it's still going and we're particularly pleased to see it popping up on the rather prestigious Sundance Channel this week... check it out here!
Artwork Inspiration...
Well, last week's mention that the new Christina Aguilera cover bears an uncanny resemblance to Erasure's 'Chorus' album has generated a lot of emails, mostly from people gently pointing out that 'Chorus' itself might be seen as bearing an uncanny resemblance to the artwork produced for the film 'Terminator', which is a fair point I think. Luke also got in touch to show me this 1988 jacket for the classic book 'To Kill A Mockingbird' which may have influenced the cover for Erasure's 'Nightbird' and which may, in turn, have influenced the new Court Yard Hounds releases I mentioned last week… no such thing as an original idea as they say!
Luke also used a Japanese greeting and farewell in his email which I have shamelessly stolen to use in this newsletter… thank you Luke!
Sayonara!

The London Sessions - Erasure Album Video Updates!
If you've been keeping an eye on the Erasure website then you will know that I added the final two video updates to the news section and to Erasure's YouTube channel last week which show Andy and Vince talking about Erasure's 25th anniversary and the new wave of electro-pop… that's seven videos in all for your viewing pleasure! If you haven't visited the website for a while then you have some catching up to do!
Erasure Inspires Christina Aguilera?
Someone very wise once said that there's no such thing as a new idea, and if we put the sleeve of the new Christina Aguilera record, 'Bionic', next to the sleeve of Erasure's 'Chorus' it would seem that they might have been right... and it's not just us who think that, even the legendary blogger Perez Hilton has picked up on the similarities on his website and it's been spreading across the internet ever since! On the back of posting that story on the Erasure website last week I had an email from Daniel (thank you!) who also pointed out the similarities between the new Court Yard Hounds sleeve and Erasure's 'Nightbird'… follow those links if you want to see for yourself!
Erasure Are Officially Part Of The ABBA Story
I also got a message from Paula last week who had attended the Abbaworld exhibition at Earl's Court in London and was able to report back that Erasure do get a mention - which she also photographed to show me and which I posted in the news section of Erasure's website last week for you to see too. Thank you Paula!
Andy Bell At The Eagle In London
Andy played a DJ set at London club The Eagle on Saturday and Russell James, who attended the event, sent over some of his pictures from the night which are now in the news section over at Andy's website. Look out for news of more DJ dates soon, and not just in the UK!
Robot Unicorn Attack… The Saga Continues
I've mentioned this online video game several times in previous newsletters but it seems that Robot Unicorn Attack - which features Erasure's 'Always' as the soundtrack music - is just going from strength to strength and has now been played over thirteen million times (incidentally the current high score is over 264,000 which is particularly impressive next to my personal best of 47) and has helped make 'Always' the most recently-downloaded Erasure track on iTunes! I've reported before how the game and the song have been been spreading across the internet through blogs and recommendations but it seems that the game, and especially 'Always', has also been inspiring people in other ways!
This week's newsletter greeting and farewell are in Serbian, courtesy of Mike and his friend Dejan… thank you!
Pozdrav!
Richard
* 'malarky' is one of my favourite words, for those of you outside the UK it's a slang word that kind of means 'bits and pieces'…

Andy Bell "Non-Stop" - Press Release
Here is the full press release of the forthcoming Andy Bell solo album "Non-Stop".

"Connoisseurs of deluxe dance-pop, seductive electro anthems and gold-plated disco grooves - lend me your ears.
Now prepare to have them blown away by Andy Bell’s magnificent new album, Non-Stop. Because this is a lavish, lustrous, sumptuous collection of exquisite dancefloor confessionals from one of the most acclaimed and beloved singers in British pop.
Although Andy’s long-running partnership with Vince Clarke in Erasure (recipients of Best British Group at The Brit Awards) remains very much a going concern - since the release of 1986’s debut, Wonderland the duo have gone on to sell over 20 million albums, 5 of them hitting #1 and had 17 Top 10 UK singles - the singer’s second solo album provides a liberating platform for his more clubby, nocturnal, disco-glam side. He has even purposely changed his vocal register and style for much of Non-Stop, putting clear blue water between his soulfully electronic solo voice and his gleaming, poppy Erasure work.
“I just needed to have a breather and see what else is going on,” Andy explains. “Spread my wings, live my life a little. This is like a different character that people don’t know me as so much. I wouldn’t say I’m a club kid, but I do love hearing remixes and club tunes. The album is quite robotic, quite tongue in cheek, lots of synths and glamorous disco. I can’t get Madonna out of my head, and I sort of feel like: if she can do that why can’t I?”
Non-Stop was co-produced and co-written by Andy Bell and Pascal Gabriel, the Belgian-born studio all-rounder whose glittering CV of collaborations includes S’Express, Ladyhawke, New Order, Debbie Harry, Kylie and Little Boots.
Andy already knew Pascal, who had previously remixed Erasure, “We had one writing session at Pascal’s house in France, then one writing session at the Strongroom in London, and we just clicked,” Andy recalls. “He is Cancerian as well, the same as Vince. Their characteristics are quite similar, both very thorough and hard working.”
The songs on Non-Stop are timeless, sexy and impeccably classy affairs, from the breathless robo-disco rush of Running Out to the moody, broody, sultry power ballads Subject/Object and Slow Release. Meanwhile, Say What You Want and Call On Me are both sublime synth-pop epics.
“Call On Me is going to be the next single, which I’m really pleased about,” Andy says “It’s a really simple song, and the backing vocal riff was inspired by Diana Ross singing Ain't No Mountain High Enough. It’s really about my friends in New York, they’re from the East Village. When I see them we just go and hang out in some of the more grimy bars.”
The sound of Non-Stop reflects Andy's infatuation with classic 1980's dance-pop and post-punk icons like Ladytron, M and Claudia Bruken. Most of the album consists of celebratory, life-affirming lyrics, but there are moments of doubt and darkness here too. The shrill, spiky, gnarly electronica of Touch is Andy’s angry reaction to the demeaning C-list celebrity freakshow of reality television.
“Touch is probably the most punk-ish thing I’ve written,” Andy says. “It is just about being offered reality shows all the time. It’s almost like they’re forcing you to make a spectacle of yourself.”
The album also reveals more of Andy’s nightclubbing, bright-white-clubbing, late-night electro-trash side than anything Erasure have yet released. With its driving groove and huskily seductive vocals, former single Will You Be There was born to be a hands-in-the-air Ibiza anthem. Much like the hedonistic machine-beat throbber Non-Stop - a song, as Andy explains, all about “being fucked up on the dancefloor.”
But in terms of decadent glamour and neon-lit cool, nothing else on the album comes close to DHDQ aka Debbie Harry Drag Queen a high-camp homage to the empress of New Wave New York and her armies of imitators.
“I was on the True Colors tour with Debbie and she’s lovely,” Andy says. “She loves the drag queens as well, in New York. To me, nobody’s ever copied her because they can’t, she’s the queen of all of them.
The one song Andy did not write on Non-Stop is the closing number, Honey If You Love Him, a pulsing nu-disco groove wedded to an agony-aunt lyric about romantic heartbreak penned by Perry Farrell of Jane’s Addiction fame. Alt-rock legend Farrell is a huge fan of Andy’s voice and suggested recording a duet together.
“Perry sang that song for a friend of his, a fashion designer who fell out with this guy,” Andy explains. “Perry is so cool, a lovely man, and quite camp.”
Classy and camp, soulful and sumptuous, Non-Stop is a deluxe dance-pop album from a master of the game. Prepare to have your ears kissed, your heart stirred and your mind blown."
Non-Stop is released on Mute on 24th May 2010.

Erasure Album Video Updates - Video #7
In the seventh video Vince and Andy has been asked about their thoughts on the current wave of new electro-pop acts that are around at the moment.
Click here to watch the video.
Video 7: Any thoughts on the new wave of electro-pop?
Andy: "Well, I'm glad that there's lot's of women doing it. Lots of young women and they seem to be very strong and forceful about what they are doing. I just wish we'd, get a bit more recognition."
